Melinda Miller – Bachelor of Education (Early Childhood) (Hons) student'The Q-Step program works to break down barriers of social disadvantage and allows people who would otherwise be turned away to demonstrate their capacity and determination to complete a higher education degree. I am one such person. I entered university via the Q-Step program four years ago and will graduate with first-class honours this April (2007). Due to my academic achievements throughout my degree I have also been awarded the 2006 University Medal. In the year 2002, I was a sole parent relying on a government pension. In the year 2007, I am a university graduate commencing my PhD. The Q-Step program has afforded me the opportunity to work towards a future in which I can financially support myself and my son. My achievements are testament to the immense value of this program and its facility to provide prospective students with the opportunity to alter their life-course despite social and economic difficulties. Sincere thanks to all at Q-Step, the program is a credit to this university.' First year, Bachelor of Urban Development (Property Economics) student'Through the Q-step program I was able to gain a place in Property Economics at QUT. I am 35 years of age with a formal education level of year 10 prior to my enrolment. Q- Step recognised my passion for my chosen profession and gave me a chance. Without Q-Step I would not have a place at QUT. I attained grades of '7' for all four of my first semester subjects and am well on my way. Thanks Q-Step.' Bachelor of Nursing/Bachelor of Health Sciences (Public Health) student'Q-Step gave me the step-up I needed in securing my place at QUT. Thanks to the program I have now successfully completed my first year of studies. Q-Step also provides students with necessary information needed for commencement at university. Q-Step Orientation provides students knowledge about low-income scholarships and equity services that are available at QUT. Thanks Q-Step.' I would have been refused entry to the course because I was one point away from the entry cut off OP and of my low socio economic status.
